domestic heating oil spill

In 2023 Fairbanks Environmental staff conducted a site investigation of a residential site that experienced a heating oil release to the interior of the residence from an above-ground storage tank leak. Heating oil was also released to the ground beneath and adjacent to the building. FE staff used Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC)-approved sampling strategies to delineate the contaminated soil around the residence and assess potential impact to indoor air quality. After identifying contaminant levels that necessitated remediation, FE staff prepared and executed a plan to remove contaminated soil for off-site thermal remediation. FE staff also provided guidance to the homeowner and contractors for removal of contaminated building materials, and conducted follow-up indoor air sampling. As a result of remediation efforts, FE staff recommended and secured site closure from the ADEC.
